International E-Waste Day 2023: Bitkom Compliance Solutions offers discount for companies

This year, International E-Waste Day on October 14, 2023, will focus on invisible e-waste. This refers to electronic devices such as LEDs, cables or printer cartridges that are not recognized as e-waste and are often overlooked during recycling. In contrast, laptops or smartphones that are still usable are for the most part disposed correctly. 

Current figures on the purchase of used technology show that unused electronics do not automatically have to be discarded. According to survey results from the Rheinland-Pfalz Consumer Center, presented in Bitkom's "Tech Weekly" podcast, 91 percent of buyers have had good to very good experiences with buying second-hand IT equipment. 

However, only 19 percent of Germans have bought a used device so far. For 63 percent, the purchase is currently out of the question.  

Remanufactured products are increasingly coming into focus 

"Secondhand offers a wide range of benefits, both for buyers and for the environment," says Anja Olsok, Managing Director of Bitkom Servicegesellschaft. Buying used electrical appliances enables considerable cost savings compared to new goods. In the process, prospective buyers often receive high-quality devices at a fraction of the original price.

In addition, extending the service life of devices makes an important contribution to reducing electronic waste and conserving resources. Devices that have already been produced are reused, which reduces the demand for new products and thus reduces the environmental impact of manufacturing. 

Suppliers of refurbished products receive discount on registration
