Amazon enables disclosure of battery EPR fees from August 2025
Amazon has informed distributors in its German store that they can clearly display the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees for batteries and battery-powered products as off 18 August 2025. Sellers can enter the relevant values in Seller Central under the 'EPR Eco-fee EUBR' category. While Amazon has thus far only published specific information for the German marketplace, the basis for the new obligation is the EU Battery Regulation. According to Article 74(5) in conjunction with Article 56(5) of the regulation, producers are required to show the costs incurred for collection, recycling and information measures separately when selling batteries.
It is important to note that the transparency requirement is applicable not only in Germany, but also in all EU member states. In the future, consumers should be able to see directly when making a purchase what proportion of the price is attributable to environmental and disposal fees.
Note: In Germany, the separate disclosure of battery EPR fees under the BattG was expressly prohibited until 18 August 2025. In France, however, producers were at liberty to decide for themselves whether or not to disclose the fees separately. As the EU Battery Directive did not contain any provisions on this, the specific regulation was the responsibility of the Member States.
