BattDG update — additional PROs approved, deadline for producers approaching
Under the new Battery Implementation Act (BattDG), existing battery registrations must be supplemented with additional information by 15 January 2026, including the designation of a so-called Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO), which replaces the former take-back systems. If the additional details are not provided, the registration will be revoked by stiftung ear.
Until recently, there were very few approved PROs available for this purpose, especially around portable batteries (see News). It was therefore only in December that industry associations Bitkom, VDMA, and ZVEI called for a moratorium on enforcement beyond 15 January.
Latest developments
The situation around PRO approvals has changed recently. On 30 December 2025, our partner Rebat was approved as PRO for all battery categories. In addition, Stiftung ear approved several other PROs at the end of December—bringing the number of approved PROs for portable batteries to five as of today.
Manufacturers must act quickly and enter into a contract with a PRO for each relevant battery category. The PRO designation and the required additional information must be recorded in the Stiftung ear battery register and reconfirmed by the PRO. If this is not completed, your battery registration may be revoked after 15 January 2026.
