Battery Day 2026: One Year Until the Battery Removability Requirement
On February 18, the International Battery Day will be in focus. This is the perfect occasion for retailers and manufacturers to prepare for the upcoming deadline of Article 11 of the EU Battery Regulation (VO (EU) 2023/1542): From February 18, 2027, device batteries and LV batteries (Light Vehicle Batteries) in your products must be easily removable and replaceable.
Who is affected?
All market participants who place products with built-in device or LV batteries on the EU market – including manufacturers, importers, and retailers. This includes smartphones, laptops, small devices, as well as e-bikes and light vehicles.
Core requirements from February 18, 2027:
-
Device batteries: Must be removable and replaceable by the end user with standard tools, without damage, throughout the device’s lifespan. Exceptions are only for special devices (e.g., waterproof models or medical devices) where the exchange is carried out by qualified professionals – strictly justified and documented.
-
LV batteries: Must be easily removable and replaceable by independent professionals.
The EU Commission has already clarified criteria such as "easily removable" (max. 5 screws, no gluing) and documentation requirements with guidelines C(2025)214 – including publication on the manufacturer’s website.
Recommendations for you as a retailer/manufacturer:
-
Check your bill of materials and designs for “Design for Removability” now.
-
Request the appropriate specifications from suppliers and ensure the availability of spare parts (at least 5 years).
-
Document exceptions and integrate checks into your compliance processes to avoid fines and recalls.
Use Battery Day to start your first audits.
