Italy tightens enforcement of EPR obligations
Companies placing products such as electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, packaging, or other regulated categories on the Italian market now face stricter implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements.
What has changed?
The EPR obligations for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and batteries have been in place for many years. The latest developments include:
-
Mandatory EPR registration numbers: Amazon now requires all sellers to provide valid EPR registration numbers.
-
Automatic registration service: Sellers who fail to submit a registration number will be automatically enrolled in Amazon’s “EPR Pay on Your Behalf” service – including the charging of environmental contributions and a service fee.
-
New product categories covered: In addition to WEEE and batteries, the scope has been extended to polyethylene, lubricating oils, tires, and packaging.
Key deadlines
-
31 December 2025: Submission deadline for WEEE registration numbers covering sales in 2025.
-
30 March 2026: Submission deadline for registration numbers for batteries, polyethylene, oils, tires, and packaging covering sales of the previous quarter.
-
Lubricating oils: Registration must be completed directly with CONOU (no Amazon service available).
Recommended next steps
-
Assess which product categories trigger registration obligations for your business in Italy.
-
Register in due time with the relevant Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) – we provide dedicated support, especially for WEEE and batteries.
-
Submit your registration numbers in Amazon Seller Central under “Performance > Compliance Management.”
By registering directly and independently, you can maintain valid EPR numbers across multiple marketplaces and business partners, avoid unnecessary service fees, and ensure full compliance with legal requirements – without added administrative burden.
