ElektroG Amendment: New Labelling and Information Requirements in Germany from 1 July 2026
With the fourth amendment to Germany’s Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG) in late 2025, the German legislator introduced further measures to improve the collection of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). While most provisions entered into force at the beginning of 2026, additional labelling and information requirements will become mandatory as of 1 July 2026.
What changes from 1 July 2026?
Key changes include:
-
the introduction of a new nationwide logo for the identification of collection and take-back points;
-
enhanced consumer information requirements, particularly regarding the risks associated with lithium batteries and the proper disposal of WEEE;
-
additional labelling and information obligations for both brick-and-mortar retailers and distance sellers.
Action Required for Producers and Retailers
The new requirements affect not only the physical take-back of end-of-life products, but also the way companies communicate with end users. In particular, businesses selling through distance sales channels should review whether their websites, product pages and ordering processes need to be updated. Missing or insufficient information may create compliance risks and expose companies to regulatory scrutiny or unfair competition claims.
Companies should therefore assess in a timely manner:
-
which take-back obligations apply to their business;
-
which labelling requirements are mandatory;
-
which consumer information must be provided; and
-
where updates to online shops and corporate websites may be required.
