EU battery passport: Register launched and new data overview published
The introduction of the digital battery passport is approaching. From 18 February 2027, a battery passport will be required for every electric vehicle battery, every light means of transport battery and every industrial battery with a capacity greater than 2 kWh that is newly placed on the market or put into service. This requirement is set out in Article 77 of the EU Batteries Regulation. Batteries not covered by this requirement include portable batteries within the meaning of the EU Batteries Regulation.
The battery passport provides digital access to information about the individual battery. Depending on the battery category, this includes information on identification, technical characteristics, performance and durability, as well as repair and recycling. The information is accessed via a QR code on the battery. Which information is visible depends on the respective access rights.
On 20 July 2026, the European Commission launched the digital product passport registry and a testing environment. The registry records the identifier of a battery passport and certain registration details. The detailed battery information is provided by the responsible company itself or through a service provider. A separate testing environment allows companies to try out the registration process in advance.
In August 2026, the Commission published an updated overview of battery passport content: the “Guidance Document: Digital Batteries Passport – data points by category”. For the battery categories concerned, it sets out which information must be included in the battery passport from February 2027 and which information is not yet required at that stage. This enables companies to identify the specific data they need for their batteries.
Companies should now assess whether their batteries require a passport and who within the supply chain can provide the necessary information. Some implementing rules are still pending. These include rules on access rights, which the Commission intends to adopt in the fourth quarter of 2026 according to its indicative timetable.
