Review of the Digital Sustainability Summit 2025: 20 years of ElektroG and the path to a circular economy
On May 15, 2025, a milestone was celebrated at Bitkom's Digital Sustainability Summit: 20 years of ElektroG - a law that has set the course for a more sustainable use of electrical and electronic equipment. Together with high-profile guests from politics, business and administration, we discussed in Berlin how the circular economy can be further strengthened in this area.
The panel, moderated by Managing Director of Bitkom Servicegesellschaft Anja Olsok, focused on key issues relating to the conservation of resources and the handling of old appliances:
What political incentives are needed to make take-back and recycling more efficient? What responsibilities do industry, trade and society bear? And how can regulatory pressure be combined with economic innovation?
The following experts on the panel provided practical input and well-founded assessments:
Andrea Gietl, BSH Hausgeräte GmbH
Alexander Goldberg, stiftung ear
Dr. Justine Hafner, Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz, nukleare Sicherheit und Verbraucherschutz (BMUV)
Peter Hölzl, MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group
The panel concluded that a functioning circular economy requires a clear legal framework, innovative strength on the part of companies and shared responsibility on the part of all players along the value chain.
