EU Parliament shortly before the adoption of the Ecodesign Regulation: Focus on digital product passport
The European Parliament is about to approve the Commission's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products (ESPR) proposal of March 22, 2022 - a decision is expected this March.
The proposal for the Ecodesign Regulation (ESPR) is an essential part of the Commission's efforts towards greener and circular products. In contrast to the existing Ecodesign Directive, which focuses exclusively on the energy efficiency of energy-related products, the new regulation addresses a variety of other products and sets requirements for durability, reusability and repairability. In particular, it regulates the provision of product information such as the digital product passport (DPP), which is intended to provide electronic access to information about the environmental sustainability of products. The initiative emphasizes the connection between sustainability and digitalization and promotes the so-called “Twin Transition”.
The battery passport, which is already anchored in the EU Battery Regulation (EU-BattVO) and will be mandatory from 2027, serves as a blueprint for a digital product passport.
