Digitalisation can contribute almost half to Germany's climate targets
Digital technologies have real potential for more climate protection. The digital association Bitkom has calculated the extent of this potential in a sustainability study. The result: CO2 emissions can be reduced by 120 megatonnes in ten years by targeted and accelerated digitalisation. This corresponds to 46 percent of the necessary savings to achieve the climate goals Germany has set for itself.
It's all about pace
Whether the full potential is exploited depends on the speed at which digitalisation is driven forward. With the rather moderate development in Germany so far, the result is only 78 megatonnes by 2030 – that is only 30 percent of the necessary CO2 savings. The study looked at these four areas: industrial manufacturing, mobility, buildings and work & business.
