The new Packaging Act 2019: Registration portal now online
The implementation of the new Packaging Act has begun: the portal of the Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister has recently gone online and the registration process has been opened. The registration concerns companies that were already previously obliged to participate in a system for their packaging. In other words, all companies that put packaged products for private consumers on the market in Germany for the first time. The registration must take place before 1st January 2019 and is free of charge. Companies that do not register will no longer be allowed to sell their packaged products after 1st January 2019.
The portal is available in German and in English, and the Zentrale Stelle Verpackungsregister has released several films (in German) explaining the registration process and other matters. If companies still have questions, they can ask the registration authority free of charge by email.
Background:
The new packaging register makes it possible for anyone to check whether manufacturers are taking responsibility for the packaging of their products. The system of taking responsibility for products ensures that those who put packaging on the market also pay for it to be collected and recycled.
