Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation passes final hurdle

The EU Packaging Regulation has passed its last formal hurdle. Today, the Council of the European Union approved the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). 

The Regulation will now be published in the Official Journal of the European Union and will enter into force 20 days after publication. It will apply 18 months after its entry into force, i.e. mid-2026. 

The Packaging Regulation – like the Battery Regulation – increasingly relies on delegated acts, through which many provisions still need to be specified in detail. However, the impact is already foreseeable. Manufacturers, importers, and distributors should take early action to assess how they will be affected by the requirements of the Packaging Regulation.
