Right to Repair - Response of the Federal Government on the possibilities of a repair bonus for electrical appliances
The Federal Government has responded to a query from the “Die Linke group” regarding the feasibility of implementing a repair bonus for electrical appliances. The response was issued by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) on behalf of the Federal Government.
In this response, the BMUV provides information on a number of topics, including the current status of the development of a repair law, the expected costs of a nationwide repair bonus, and different implementation models for the repair bonus:
Timeline for the announced repair law: According to the BMUV, the draft of the repair law is still in progress.
Expected costs of a nationwide repair bonus: The anticipated financial outlay for a nationwide repair bonus, applicable solely to electrical appliances, is estimated at approximately 34 million euros. This figure is based on the experiences gained from the implementation of regional repair bonuses in Germany.
Manufacturer-funded repair bonus: The Federal Government is currently examining different implementation models. It has not yet been determined whether a repair bonus will be introduced.
Funding program for repair initiatives: A funding program to promote repair initiatives is scheduled to commence in the current year, 2024, with a total budget of 3 million euros.
